Spring, 1940

Spring is one of the paintings acquired by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 2013. It comes from the period in which Edwin felt aligned with the Surrealist movement and it's interesting to compare it with the previous Picture of the Month, The Shape of the Night, which seems to be greatly influenced by Rene Magritte.

But in Spring Edwin seems to be finding his own voice and a few months later he would paint A Farewell to Surrealism and declare his "flirtation with Surrealism" over. However its influence would live on in the unorthodox, experimental work he would produce during the next dozen years.
