Caley Station, Edinburgh, 1942

Edwin donated this painting to the City of Edinburgh art collection shortly before his death in 1990. It was painted in 1942 and is set in the Caledonian Station, Edinburgh. To those who knew him, the red silhouette is unmistakably that of the artist.

It was featured in A Capital View - the Art of Edinburgh at the City Art Centre from 10th May to 6th July 2014 and also in the book of the same title published by Birlinn Books.

The Caley Station was closed to passenger traffic in 1965 and eventually demolished in 1967. The associated Caledonian Hotel lives on, now called the Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh. You can view more information about the station on the Canmore website, including some old photos showing features you see in the painting such as the clock, ticket office and Gordon's Gin advert.
