The Blue Sun, 1950

Edwin painted this work in 1950 and called it Meditation on the Blue Sun in his solo exhibition at the New Gallery in Edinburgh the following year. He changed the title to The Blue Sun in the 1980s. It's a very interesting take on the human body!

For years we wondered what Edwin's inspiration for this painting was, but now we think we know. An article in The Scotsman newspaper describes how the sun turned blue in Scotland on 26/27 September 1950. This academic paper by the Astronomer Royal for Scotland describes how the phenomenon was observed in Edinburgh and was caused by forest fires burning in Alberta, Canada.
