Kinleith Mill Dam, 1932

This is a good example of the watercolours Edwin painted early in his career. The subject is the dam at Kinleith Mill on the Water of Leith. This is very close to Juniper Green, where Edwin lived from childhood in 1918 until the 1940s.

At the time Juniper Green was a village just outside Edinburgh, but it now lies within the boundaries of the expanded city. Many of Edwin's landscape paintings were inspired by the Water of Leith and its mills. Kinleith Mill has now been demolished but the dam can still be found.
