A Light on the Styx, 1939
Edwin painted A Light on the Styx in December 1939, a few months after he started painting surrealist works. His interest in Surrealism mirrored that taken by some of his contemporaries in the Edinburgh art scene in the late 1930s. One such contemporary was William Gear who exhibited surrealist works with the New Era Group in 1939. Two of Edwin's paintings were exhibited at the City Art Centre, Edinburgh, from October 2015 to February 2016 in an exhibition entitled Jagged Generation: William Gear’s Contemporaries and Influences.
