Incoming: New Acquisitions at the City Art Centre exhibition
Edwin's painting The Schism - Final Diagnosis was exhibited in Incoming: New Acquisitions at the City Art Centre from 2 Oct 2021 to 28 May 2023. The exhibition showed a selection of works acquired for the City of Edinburgh collection within the last 10 years.
Here's how the painting was described in this exhibition:
"Between 1939 and 1941 Lucas experimented freely with Surrealism, executing a series of colourful, immersive paintings and otherworldly drawings. His imagery, while ambiguous in its symbolism, seems to reference dreams and psychoanalytical theories.
"The Schism - Final Diagnosis dates from towards the end of that period. In fact, Lucas later exhibited it under the alternative title A Farewell to Surrealism, suggesting that he regarded it as some form of conclusion. The painting was purchased from the artist's family in 2019, following the retrospective exhibition Edwin G. Lucas: An Individual Eye."
