Winter Exhibition at Colinton Arts
Full-size limited-edition Giclée prints of one of Edwin’s best-known works, Taboo (Peep!), are available online from Colinton Arts in Edinburgh. They were displayed in their Winter Exhibition from Nov 2021 to Jan 2022.
Edwin lived very close to Colinton for 36 years, in Juniper Green from 1916-1947 and then Hailes from 1947-1952. He attended Juniper Green Primary School and the old school building, now converted to flats, is named Lucas Gardens in his memory.
Taboo (Peep!) is described as follows in Helen Scott's book Edwin G. Lucas: An Individual Eye:
"Lucas displayed a high proportion of recent works in his second solo exhibition in 1951. This one was shown under the title Peep!, but was subsequently renamed Taboo. The painting demonstrates the artist's ongoing preoccupation with general Surrealist themes, although he always addressed such subjects according to his own unique interpretations."
