City Dweller, 1951

Amedeo Modigliani was among the artists Edwin admired in the 1930s and it's easy to imagine Modigliani's influence in this long-necked portrait. The view behind is a kind of Cubist take on the tenements of Edinburgh's Old Town.

Edwin painted City Dweller in 1951 and exhibited it in his second solo exhibition at the New Gallery in Edinburgh, in August and September of that year.
