Untitled (No.41 Ann Street), 1952

Stairwell and Cupola (No.42 Ann Street), 1980

When Edwin married his wife Marjorie in 1952 they moved into No 41 Ann Street in Edinburgh. The picture on the left, painted in the same year, was Edwin's depiction of the interior of this house. It was one of his last paintings for more than 25 years while he focused on family life.

About 10 years later the family made a big move - all the way across the road to No 42 Ann Street! One of Edwin's first pictures when he returned to painting in 1980 was obviously inspired by the 1952 work and the stairwell and cupola in No 42.

An interesting footnote is that the people who bought No 41 from Edwin and Marjorie were the Scottish artist Mardi Barrie, her husband Stuart who taught at Edinburgh College of Art for many years, and Mardi's mother Jenny. They became life-long friends of the Lucas family.
