Bedroom Abstract, 1949
Bedroom Abstract is one of the paintings acquired by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 2013. It was painted in 1949 and is one of the works that prompted Patrick Elliott, senior curator at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, to comment:
"They are impressive because they are inexplicable, I've not seen anything quite like them before in my 20 years at the Gallery of Modern Art: there's a bit of Picasso, but overall he's got nothing in common with anyone painting in Scotland at the time - or in fact anywhere else."
(As quoted in The Herald, online edition 15 October 2013, printed edition 16 October 2013)
Picasso's influence can be seen here in the highly abstracted figures. How many bodies do you see?
