Water of Leith Valley and Pentland Hills from Kingsknowe, 1938

A major retrospective of Edwin's career was held at the City Art Centre, Edinburgh from 4 Aug 2018 till 10 Feb 2019. During the exhibition, Picture of the Month illustrated each phase of his career in turn, using some of the 60 works that were exhibited.

Edwin's watercolours started becoming more adventurous in the late 1930s. This colourful painting, now part of the City of Edinburgh’s Art collection, is a good example. The Water of Leith is on the left and Hailes Halt railway station in the foreground. In the distance we see Colinton and the Pentland Hills.
