Terrorism (Together), 1946

A major retrospective of Edwin's career was held at the City Art Centre, Edinburgh from 4 Aug 2018 till 10 Feb 2019. During the exhibition, Picture of the Month illustrated each phase of his career in turn, using some of the 60 works that were exhibited.

Terrorism (Together) is described as follows in Helen Scott's book Edwin G. Lucas: An Individual Eye:

"In 1946 Lucas completed Together, one of the most ambitious compositions of his career. This painting, approaching almost two metres in width, portrays a group of figures within an interior setting. A woman tends to a baby in a crib, while a boy plays nearby on the floor with a toy cannon. Two male figures stand behind, one of whom carries a dagger. The relationships between these characters are ambiguous; domestic harmony is juxtaposed with the implicit threat of violence. Indeed, during the 1980s Lucas renamed this work Terrorism. Still-life and landscape elements add to the visual complexity of the arrangement. As with most of his mature output, the painting is brilliantly coloured and full of detail."
