The Girl in the Bus, 1947

A major retrospective of Edwin's career was held at the City Art Centre, Edinburgh from 4 Aug 2018 till 10 Feb 2019. During the exhibition, Picture of the Month illustrated each phase of his career in turn, using some of the 60 works that were exhibited.

The Girl in the Bus is described as follows in Helen Scott's book Edwin G. Lucas: An Individual Eye:

"In this painting, Lucas highlights the extraordinary details of everyday life. Concentrating on the back of the girl’s head, rather than her face, he depicts her hair as an elaborate sequence of curls and ringlets. He planned the unusual perspective in preparatory sketches, but the decorative stylisation of the subject was only realised in this final version."
