Storm Signal, 1951

A major retrospective of Edwin's career was held at the City Art Centre, Edinburgh from 4 Aug 2018 till 10 Feb 2019. During the exhibition, Picture of the Month illustrated each phase of his career in turn, using some of the 60 works that were exhibited.

In 1951 Edwin started painting works with a very high degree of abstraction. Storm Signal is a good example and was one of the New Paintings shown in his solo exhibition in 1951. Here's how Helen Scott describes it in her book Edwin G. Lucas: An Individual Eye:

"In the early 1950s, Lucas explored ever more abstract modes of expression. Here, he presents a stylised landscape reminiscent of the work of Paul Klee."
