Magic Casements, 1980
A major retrospective of Edwin's career was held at the City Art Centre, Edinburgh from 4 Aug 2018 till 10 Feb 2019. During the exhibition, Picture of the Month illustrated each phase of his career in turn, using some of the 60 works that were exhibited.
Edwin stopped painting shortly after he started a family. He continued to draw and sketch, and made a couple of watercolours, but it was nearly 30 years before he returned to serious painting in oils. Magic Casements was his first such work, painted in January 1980 when he was on holiday in Florida. Helen Scott says in her book Edwin G. Lucas: An Individual Eye:
"This composition is virtually abstract, but the colour tones and spatial ambiguities recall the endless vistas of Surrealist works like The Human Situation (1941)."
