A Farewell to Adolescence, Sept 1939
The Worshipper, 13/9/1939

From August-December 2019 the Pictures of the Month followed a pivotal period of Edwin's career 80 years after it happened. He moved into his first studio in August 1939 and immediately started creating works inspired by Surrealism.

In September he painted A Farewell to Adolescence. The picture is based on the view from Edwin's room in the parental home in Juniper Green, but his new-found interest in Surrealism is evident! The title is ironic because Edwin was 28 years old, but the studio provided a measure of independence he didn't have before. Furthermore, war was declared on 3rd September and maybe the title refers to the serious times ahead?

He also created 4 of his Surrealist drawings in September. Here we see The Worshipper which is dated 13.9.39.
