The Blue Sun, 1950

During 2021, Pictures of the Month marked the 70th anniversary of Edwin's second solo exhibition by featuring 12 of the paintings he exhibited in Aug/Sep 1951. The exhibition focused on "New Paintings" and about 45 of the 58 paintings were either newly painted or never exhibited before.

This work is entitled Meditation on the Blue Sun in the exhibition catalogue and dated 1950. Edwin changed the title to The Blue Sun in the 1980s. It's a very interesting take on the human body!

For years we wondered what Edwin's inspiration for this painting was, but now we think we know. An article in The Scotsman newspaper describes how the sun turned blue in Scotland on 26/27 September 1950, and an academic paper by the Astronomer Royal for Scotland describes how the phenomenon was observed in Edinburgh and was caused by forest fires burning in Alberta, Canada.
