Taboo (Peep!), 1951
During 2021, Pictures of the Month marked the 70th anniversary of Edwin's second solo exhibition by featuring 12 of the paintings he exhibited in Aug/Sep 1951. The exhibition focused on "New Paintings" and about 45 of the 58 paintings were either newly painted or never exhibited before.
This one was painted in 1951 and originally exhibited with the title Peep!, although Edwin renamed it Taboo in the 1980s. Helen Scott, in her book Edwin G. Lucas: An Individual Eye said:
"The painting demonstrates the artist's ongoing preoccupation with general Surrealist themes, although he always addressed such subjects according to his own unique interpretations."
