Hi-Fi Cabinet No.1, Top, circa 1940s
Edwin had two cabinets that he decorated with striking paintings. This is on the top of one that was used for storing blankets in the family home in the 1960s-1970s, but we believe had another purpose when it was made. When was that? Well, the lid is lined with 4 newspapers, all dated November 1944. We believe he made it at that time to house a record player. We'll probably never be sure exactly when it was painted, but this picture on the lid has stylistic similarities with a few of his paintings from the mid-1940s.
The photo below shows how the lid engages a catch to keep it open when first lifted. The catch disengages when lifted again. There's a hole in the back where the power cable would go. You can also see how newspapers are pinned to the inside of the lid. The second photo shows the date on one of the newspapers. The cabinet underneath holds LP records.
