Upstairs Landing, 1949

Edwin's first exhibition in England was held at the Beecroft Art Gallery in Southend-on-Sea from 10 June to 10 Sep 2023. Leading up to and during the exhibition, Picture of the Month featured some works that were being exhibited to a large audience for the first time.

Edwin exhibited this one in his first solo exhibition, in 1950, entitled Upstairs Landing. Hand-written notes made in the 1980s indicate he briefly considered renaming it Mother's Boy, which perhaps offers a clue to its meaning.
