Abstract Lifeforms with Frog, circa 1952

There was a trend towards a greater degree of abstraction in some of Edwin's paintings during the early 1950s. One such work was 'Abstract Lifeforms with Frog'. It is undated but probably painted around the time he married in 1952 and started a family in 1953. Here's how Helen Scott describes it in her book 'Edwin G. Lucas: An Individual Eye':

"Several of Lucas’s mature works address themes of the natural world, with realistic and abstract elements incorporated side-by-side. In this example, the non-representational aspects of the image are balanced by the stylised plant forms and rather comical blue-eyed frog."
