Organic Abstract (Exploration 1/86), 1986
In 1986, Edwin was sorting through some old paintings and found a small, abstract one that he christened "Exploration". It provided inspiration for trying something similar again and he produced this one. He called it "Exploration 1/86" because he intended developing this theme further, but soon he discovered that the deteriorating eyesight he was suffering from became too severe for him to continue painting. He settled on a different title, "Organic Abstract", and this was the last painting he completed.
Below is the original "Exploration", painted in 1952. Both paintings are currently hanging in "Edwin G Lucas: A Purely Individual Painter", an exhibition at Hawick Museum & Gallery from 05 Jul - 05 Oct 2025.
