Edwin exhibited this painting, dated 1944-45, at his solo exhibition in 1951 with the title "Canal & Lanark Road at Slateford". The village of Slateford is at the bottom of the hill. The building in the centre was called Stoneyport House. It's no longer there, but the wharf, which was used to load barges with stone from two quarries nearby, can still be seen. The painting, at slightly more than a metre wide, is one of the largest landscapes Edwin painted.
